Water as a projection of the streams of the Unconscious into the world is the best way to convey the immersion, sometimes drowning of the world in the external. It is not for nothing that there is so much water in Tarkovsky’s films.
The concept of the Unconscious is key to analytical psychology and is part of the artist’s worldview. Immersion in the total environment, which we have almost no phenomenological knowledge of, is an important motif of art in general.
